JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is a dermal filler used to treat facial wrinkles and to increase lip fullness. Approved by the FDA in 2010, JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC contains hyaluronic acid, water, and lidocaine. Hyaluronic acid is designed to improve the appearance of wrinkles by increasing volume beneath the skin’s surface.

How JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC Works

The “XC” in the product name indicates the presence of 0.3 percent lidocaine, an anesthetic designed to prevent pain from the injections. It can also save time because patients won’t need a separate topical pain reliever applied prior to the procedure.
What to Expect During Treatment With JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC
The physician will begin by marking the treatment area with a pen and cleansing the skin. He or she will then inject JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC around the mouth and lips and gently massage the area to help the filler distribute evenly and reduce the risk of swelling. The entire procedure may take up to one hour.
Patients won’t feel any pain. Instead, they might feel slight pressure and a tingling sensation as the product is injected. Patients can leave once the injections are completed.
Risks and Side Effects
JUVÉDERM® Ultra XC is safe when administered by a trained physician. However, patients may experience the following common side effects:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Firmness
- Lumps
- Skin discoloration
- Bruising
These side effects are typically mild and last less than seven days.
Allergic reactions are rare but can be serious. Patients should call their doctor if they experience any of the following side effects after injection:
- Difficulty breathing
- Hives
- Rash
Patients with known allergies to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine are not good candidates for JUVÉDERM® products and should speak to their provider about other options for cosmetic treatment.
In rare cases, JUVÉDERM® can lead to infections, scarring, and death to affected skin tissues.
After the Procedure
Patients might see noticeable differences in their skin almost immediately, with results potentially lasting up to a year. Additional follow-up treatments, according to provider recommendations, will be necessary to maintain their desired results.
Patients can go back to work right after treatment, but should avoid strenuous exercise, sun exposure, and alcoholic beverages for 24 hours to minimize redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site.
