The hyaluronic acid in JUVÉDERM® XC is a natural substance found in the human body that stimulates the production of connective tissue, called collagen, which helps give skin a plump and youthful appearance. Risks and Side Effects
Common side effects of an injection with JUVÉDERM® XC include:

- Itching
All of these side effects are temporary and typically subside within two to four weeks.
Who is a Candidate?
JUVÉDERM® XC is not recommended for patients who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a history of excessive scarring or pigmentation disorders
- Are receiving therapy used to decrease the body’s immune response
- Have a skin injury near the injection site
Preparing for JUVÉDERM® XC
Before obtaining treatment, patients should speak with a medical professional about their cosmetic goals and expectations. JUVÉDERM® procedures are minimally invasive and often done right after the consultation. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, patients don’t need much preparation.
Generally, before the consultation and treatment, patients should avoid:
- Medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and St. John’s wort
- Alcohol
- Smoking

What to Expect During Treatment
Before injecting the filler, the physician will use a pen to mark the treatment area. He or she will then inject JUVÉDERM® XC around the mouth and nose and gently massage the area to help the filler distribute evenly and reduce the risk of swelling. The entire procedure usually takes between 45 minutes.
The injection also contains a small amount of pain-reducing lidocaine to help minimize any pain or discomfort during treatment.
What to Expect After JUVÉDERM® XC
For 24 hours after the injection, patients should avoid strenuous activity, sun exposure, wearing makeup, and consuming alcohol. However, overall recovery time is minimal.
Most patients notice the effects of JUVÉDERM® XC immediately after the injection, or once the swelling subsides. Results typically last six to 12 months.
