Restylane® Silk
Restylane® Silk is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid-based filler designed for lip augmentation and to treat wrinkles around the mouth.
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin, especially in connective tissue, making it a very effective filler that provides subtle and long-lasting results.
Who is a Candidate?
Restylane® Silk is for adults who would like to minimize the appearance of wrinkles around the mouth and naturally augment their lips. Injections can help restore a youthful appearance and boost confidence.
Restylane® Silk is not recommended for patients who are:
- Allergic to bacterial protein
- Immunocompromised
- Taking blood thinners
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Under age 21
Restylane® Silk produces results by adding volume underneath the skin where collagen and other tissue has been lost due to aging. This helps smooth out and lift the lips, making them look plumper.
The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® Silk clings to the skin and attracts moisture, helping to preserve the recently added volume. The water in the filler helps to add volume.
To minimize bruising from Restylane® Silk, patients should stop taking the following about two weeks prior to treatment:
- Aspirin
- Vitamin E
- Fish oil
- Ibuprofen (Motrin)
- St. John’s wort
Patients may take arnica before and after the procedure to help minimize bruising and swelling.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Restylane® Silk treatment is performed in the doctor’s office and doesn’t require any incisions. The physician will begin by cleansing the area with an antiseptic and applying local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort. The doctor will then determine how much Restylane® Silk is necessary to achieve the desired results.
Next, he or she will use an ultrafine needle to inject the Restylane® under the skin into the treatment area.
Depending on how much filler the patient needs and if any additional treatments are being performed, Restylane® injections can take anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour.
Potential Risks and Side Effects
Risks of Restylane® Silk treatment include:
- Bruising or bleeding at injection site
- Infection
- Allergic reaction
- Irregularities in the filling (e.g., in the firmness of your skin)
Patients may experience the following side effects after treatment:
- Pain or itching at the injection site
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Headache
- Tenderness
These side effects typically resolve within seven to 18 days.
Recovery Process
Recovery time will vary, depending on how many injections the patient received and where. Patients can expect to experience some redness, swelling, or bruising for about a week after treatment. It’s important to limit sun exposure to prevent exacerbating the swelling or bruising. Patients are free to return to work soon after.
Patients can expect to see results immediately after the procedure, with full results visible within one week after the procedure.
Because Restylane® Silk injections aren’t permanent fillers, patients will need additional rounds of injections to maintain results. The physician will help the patient create a schedule for additional injections after the initial treatment.
