Restylane® Kysse
Restylane® Kysse is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler injected into the lips and the lines around the upper lip to temporarily add fullness to the lips and help smooth the wrinkles around the upper lip (perioral lines) in patients over the age of 21.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring sugar, found in the human body, which is used to add volume to the treatment area. The HA in Restylane® Kysse has been modified to last longer in the body than naturally occurring HA. Restylane® Kysse also contains 0.3 % lidocaine to minimize pain during injection.
The Effectiveness of Restylane® Kysse
Restylane® Kysse has been studied extensively to determine if it was effective and to ensure that it is safe for use. The study doctors reported:
- 77% (129/168) of subjects had at least a 1-point improvement in lip fullness 6 months after treatment
- 60% (101/169) of subjects had at least a 1-point improvement in lip fullness 12 months after treatment
The subjects reported:
- 88% (148/169) rated an improvement in the appearance 6 months after treatment
- 78% (132/169) rated an improvement in the appearance 12 months after treatment
Who is a Candidate?
During an initial consultation, the doctor will ask questions about the patient’s medical history to determine if they are a candidate for Restylane® Kysse. The filler is not recommended for patients with any of the following conditions:
- History of severe allergic reaction or multiple severe allergies
- Previous experience with allergic reactions to HA fillers
- Allergic to anesthetics, such as lidocaine
Patients with skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infections in the treatment area should postpone the procedure until healing is complete. Use of Restylane® Kysse in these instances could delay healing or worsen skin problems.
How to Prepare for the Procedure
Before the injection, patients may need to temporarily discontinue use of St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E supplements, aspirin, and other NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Restylane® Kysse treatment is performed in the doctor’s office under local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort. The physician will cleanse the area with an antiseptic and determine how much Restylane® Kysse is necessary to achieve the desired results.
Next, he or she will use an ultrafine needle to inject Restylane® Kysse under the skin into the treatment area. The entire procedure will typically take a few minutes.
Potential Side Effects and Risks
Side effects are mild or moderate in nature and typically resolve within seven days. The most common side effects may include:
- Redness
- Pain/tenderness
- Firmness
- Swelling
- Lumps/bumps
- Bruising
- Itching
- Discoloration
Other risks include infection, scarring, change in skin tone, cold sores, vision changes, and unintentional injection into a blood vessel.
Recovery Process
After the procedure, patients should minimize exposure to the sun and avoid being in the heat and cold until any redness or swelling has disappeared. Exposure to extreme heat or cold may cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site.
