JUVÉDERM® Volbella®
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC is a dermal filler injected into the lips to increase volume and improve the appearance of perioral lines, often called “lipstick lines,” in adults over the age of 21.
When administered by a trained provider, JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC lasts up to one year.
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC is a crystal-clear gel containing hyaluronic acid and water that is injected directly into and around the lips using an ultra-fine needle to temporarily plump the lips for lip augmentation and to smooth the appearance of lines around the mouth. The lidocaine gel improves the comfort of the injection by reducing sensitivity to pain.
The “XC” in the product name indicates the filler contains 0.3 percent lidocaine, an anesthetic designed to minimize pain from the injections. This can also help save time because patients won’t need a separate topical pain reliever applied prior to the procedure.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, meaning the risk of an allergic reaction is low.
Compared to other fillers, JUVÉDERM® products contain the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid currently available in a dermal filler and offer longer-lasting results.
Like other hyaluronic acid–based fillers, Juvéderm can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if patients are unhappy with the results or experience complications.
What to Expect During Treatment With JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC
The physician will begin by marking the treatment area with a pen and cleansing the skin. He or she will then inject JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC around the mouth and lips and gently massage the area to help the filler distribute evenly and reduce the risk of swelling. The entire procedure may take up to one hour.
Patients won’t feel any pain. Instead, they might feel slight pressure and a tingling sensation as the product is injected. Patients can leave once the injections are completed.
Risks and Side Effects
JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC is safe when administered by a trained physician. However, patients may experience the following common side effects:
- Redness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Firmness
- Lumps/bumps
- Itching
- Skin discoloration
- Bruising
These side effects are typically mild or moderate and last 30 days or less.
Allergic reactions are rare but can be serious enough to require medical attention. Patients should call their physician if they experience difficulty breathing, a rash, or hives.
Patients with known allergies to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine are not good candidates for JUVÉDERM® products and should consider other options for cosmetic treatment.
In rare instances, JUVÉDERM® fillers can lead to scarring, infections, and death to affected skin tissues.
After the Procedure
Treatment results may be visible almost immediately after the procedure, with results potentially lasting up to one year. Patients will need additional follow-up treatments to maintain desired results.
Patients can go back to work right after the procedure, but should avoid engaging in strenuous exercise, excessive sun exposure, and consuming alcoholic beverages for 24 hours to minimize redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site.
